Trustees debate township exposure to future PFAS projects as board accepts partial EGLE grant

As the board moved to accept the EGLE grant for the Hillsborough PFAS area, trustees pressed staff on the township’s potential financial exposure if future PFAS sites require larger budgets.
One trustee warned that expressing a township contribution as "up to 10%" of project costs could oblige large sums if a future site’s full cost grows to tens of millions. "If we state we're gonna contribute 10%...what happens when the next one comes in at $50,000,000 and 10% of that is $5,000,000?" the trustee asked, urging the board to convert the match to a fixed dollar cap.
Manager Smith and Engineer Thorn said they could work with the board to present a specific dollar-amount recommendation during the required budget amendment. "That's what was recommended...but I have no problem going with a solid dollar amount," Manager Smith said, noting flexibility in implementation and that staff will continue pursuing other funding sources for remaining properties.
The board directed staff to return with clearer match options and implementation steps as part of grant finalization and the upcoming budget amendment.
