Resident urges focus on redeveloping vacant commercial properties in New Smyrna Beach

"I would like to see a focus on existing commercial properties in New Smyrna Beach and see what we can do to redevelop and support those," Sailor said, noting vacant parcels along US‑1 and revitalization examples such as Canal Street. She asked the city to create an inventory of unutilized commercial space and list sizes so potential businesses can see where they could fit.
Sailor also raised questions about soon‑to‑be‑vacated properties—including the hospital and the Utilities Commission building—and asked for timelines and potential reuse options, suggesting possibilities such as physical therapy, assisted living or municipal uses. Members thanked her and noted staff are tracking potential reuse and zoning steps.
