Director Corbin reviewed the city27s sign code history, saying the 2011 update called for pole signs to be removed over time and that the previous commission extended the amortization deadline to Nov. 29, 2025. Corbin presented an inventory showing clusters of pole signs on US 1 and beachside, and said staff needs direction: begin enforcement in November, extend the deadline, or pursue further outreach and amendments.
Commissioners repeatedly raised the cost to small businesses of replacing tall pole signs, noted some signs are county-owned and therefore not in the city27s inventory, and suggested using CRA funds or permitting replacement only after damage, change of tenant, or a new permit (an attrition model). The commission asked staff to draft ordinance language that strikes the strict November takedown date, clarifies exemptions for historic signs, and adds definitions for feather/flag and projection signs ahead of a July hearing.
