Representative describes multi-level incident command, DNR park closures amid northern wildfires

At the International Falls City Council meeting the state representative described ongoing wildfire incidents that have affected the Boundary Waters region, nearby communities and, in some cases, crossed into Canadian territory. He said multiple levels of incident command are deployed and that crews have access to retardant, aircraft and logistical support for an extended response.
“It is dangerous,” the representative said, describing unprecedented dry conditions and sudden fire behavior. He reported that the DNR banned open fires in certain state parks following observations that embers and high winds allowed fires to jump large distances. The representative said some fires moved across several miles in a single day and that the incident command structure is operating like a military-style response with food, supplies and coordination in place.
He also described the economic impacts on tourism and local businesses, noting that smoke and closures have reduced visitation in communities such as Grand Marais and Ely and that a series of town halls and regional meetings are planned to coordinate assistance and responses. The representative said he and colleagues will continue to press for support and resources at the state and federal levels.
