Staff explained the arithmetic residents use to estimate tax changes: multiply the assessed property value by the millage rate, then divide by 1,000. Using sample properties, staff said most homeowners would likely see increases in the range of $30–$80 a year if the higher millage is adopted; owners of very large parcels could see increases of several hundred dollars.
"If you had a real big piece of property, it might go a couple hundred bucks, but most people went anywhere from 30 to $80 more a year," staff said while summarizing illustrative calculations. Staff also noted agricultural exemptions limit increases for qualifying farmland, and cautioned that rising assessments or changes in exemptions could alter individual outcomes.
