Pearson commission backs applying for $200,000 FRDAP grant to renovate Chipper Jones Park

The Pearson Planning & Zoning Commission voted to recommend that the town apply to the Florida Recreation Development Assistance Program (FRDAP) for up to $200,000 to renovate Chipper Jones Park.

Ryan, who presented the request, said the town qualifies for the program’s maximum under Pearson’s ready designation. “So because we have that ready designation, we can ask up to the maximum amount, $200,000 without having to match anybody,” he said, describing playground replacement, ball-field improvements and restroom work as likely uses of the funds.

Ryan walked commissioners through prior FRDAP awards to Pearson and explained the application and scoring process, including a required maintenance plan. He told the commission staffers and a playground vendor estimated a major playground package in the $120,000–$140,000 range, with smaller accessory pieces and site work possibly using the remainder of an award.

Commissioners asked whether items would meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements; Ryan said the proposed large play structures would include ADA elements and that the town had discussed accessible swings and rubberized surfacing with vendors, but noted accessibility equipment can be misused and that some surfacing options are costly.

The commission approved two motions: (1) recommending the town apply to FRDAP for $200,000 for Chipper Jones Park, and (2) recommending that, if the town applies and is awarded the grant, the town council amend the capital-improvement plan to include the $200,000 project. Chair Paul Martel called for voice votes on both motions and announced the ayes had it.
