Residents urge committee to keep Planning and Parks commissions in Compton charter

During public comments, Ron Dowell told the Charter Review Committee that "Citizen commissions are not merely advisory bodies" and urged the committee to retain charter protections for the Planning Commission and Parks & Recreation Commission.
Dowell presented budget figures in support of his argument: he said Compton budgeted "about $29,000,000 for sheriff services compared to about $2,000,000 for recreation," adding that the LA County Parks Needs Assessment shows Compton has "only 0.06 acres of park land per 1,000 residents." He argued those commissions "help guide Compton's general plan" and said removing charter protections would make it easier for future councils to weaken public oversight. "I urge this committee to preserve and strengthen these Charter Commissions," Dowell said.
Committee members thanked Dowell for his comments and recorded his remarks for the record. The committee did not take immediate action on a charter provision at that moment but acknowledged the public concern and noted staff will include public correspondence in materials sent to council.
