Charter committee asks council to extend review through Dec. 31, 2028; requests special Aug. 4 meeting

The City of Compton Charter Review Committee voted unanimously July 22 to ask City Council to extend the committeethrough Dec. 31, 2028, and to schedule a presentation either on the July 28 council agenda or at a special council meeting on Aug. 4.

Assistant City Manager Tamara Benz told the committee staff would prepare "a comprehensive review" for council that would include a handbook, funding guidance, and a chart showing every recommendation and what remains unfinished. "My recommendation would be to say up through December 2028, being that the next general election is November '28," Benz said during the meeting.

Commissioners first voted to reserve time for a meeting on Aug. 3 (motion passed unanimously) and later voted on a separate motion to request the committee be extended to 12/31/2028 (motion passed unanimously). After further discussion about council availability, the committee moved and voted to ask staff to request a special council meeting on Aug. 4 to hear the committee's report rather than rely solely on the July 28 agenda.

The extension does not by itself place items on the ballot. Benz said the committee's recommendation would allow more time to develop proposals to present to council for potential placement on a future ballot, and she noted deadlines the staff must meet to place items on an election calendar. The committee also asked staff to include members' materials and any audit or legal references in the report to council. The committee expects to notify the public of any council action once staff receives a decision.
