New superintendent Jamie Soltis outlines community meet-and-greets, safety training and fall dates

Dr. Jamie Soltis, in his first report to the Roanoke County School Board as superintendent, thanked board members for their support and outlined recent and upcoming community engagement opportunities. "I want to thank each of you for placing your trust in me to lead this outstanding school division," Soltis said. He reported recent meet-and-greets (July 20 at Northside High School; July 21 at Glenvar High School) and listed three upcoming community meet-and-greets: July 27 at William Byrd High School, July 30 at Hidden Valley High School, and August 6 at Cave Spring High School.
Soltis described work on school safety and professional learning: threat-assessment training for administrators led by Rhonda Segal, takeaways from a state safety conference (including focus on human-trafficking training), and ongoing social-emotional learning implementation with Character Strong. He also highlighted the division's "Campaign for Excellence" fundraising effort and said one anticipated donation will be the largest to date. Soltis reminded families of several fall dates: Load the Bus (July 31–August 2, kickoff July 31 at 3 p.m. at the Bonsack Walmart), convocation (Aug. 6 at the Berglund Performing Arts Center), and the first day of school (Aug. 13).
