The Sarasota County School Board voted 3' on July 21 to move regular board meetings from a 10 a.m. start time to 6 p.m., beginning with the first regular meeting in August. Proponents, led by board member Tom Edwards, said evening meetings would allow more families, students and staff to attend and showcase student achievements.
Edwards argued that later start times promote "community" and make it easier to bring students and families to the dais to celebrate accomplishments and engage on issues. The motion was seconded and carried on a roll call (Edwards yes, Marinelli yes, Rose no, Barker yes). The chair announced the motion passed 3' and directed staff to make schedule adjustments; the board noted the change will be implemented with notice to the public.
Board members said the move is intended to increase public participation; staff will post revised meeting times and incorporate the change into the district's calendar.
