The Medford High School Building Committee on Wednesday approved an amendment to the SMMA contract to add consulting services for geothermal design, photovoltaic (PV) scope and pool scanning/design, while excluding a $9,000 line item for a new learn‑to‑swim basin.
SMMA representatives told the committee that specialized geothermal expertise (Haley & Aldrich) is needed to advise mechanical engineers and to participate in on‑site test borings and modeling. “Geothermal is a specialty… Haley and Aldrich… does have that expertise and will be advising,” an SMMA representative said, noting the firm had previously provided geotechnical services and that the geothermal scope is a separate, supplemental service.
Committee members pressed on cost and timing: some asked whether the pool‑scan work could be approved separately or held until the committee decides on a new basin. The committee motioned to approve the amendment with the pool new‑basin item (item e) removed; the roll call returned 11 in the affirmative, 0 negative, 1 abstention and 3 absent, and the motion passed. Staff said additional cost and funding updates, and a fuller discussion of the CMR scope and pricing, will follow at the August meeting.
