Board approves pilot to cut temporary food-permit fees for veteran-serving groups through June 2027

The McHenry County Board of Health voted to implement a pilot program waiving standard temporary and seasonal food-permit fees for qualifying veteran-serving organizations and replacing them with a $50 annual permit fee through June 30, 2027.
Staff proposed the pilot after the county board requested consideration of fee reductions for veterans organizations. To limit administrative burden and avoid broad fee-waiver categories, the department will work with the county Veterans Assistance Commission to maintain an eligibility list; applicants on that list would qualify for the $50 fee for temporary or seasonal food permits. Patty (staff) prepared a data snapshot showing a small number of such events in recent years and projected modest revenue impact.
"We will continue to track the information and report back," staff said, proposing data collection during the pilot so the board can evaluate whether the waiver affects event frequency or the department's budget. The board approved the pilot by roll-call vote and directed staff to return with monitored data before the next budget cycle.
