Traffic-safety volunteer warns speeding and truck weight enforcement remain county problems

At the County of Pearson council meeting on June 17, traffic-safety volunteer Lester Pulley summarized the county team's June 5 meeting and flagged persistent safety problems around town.
Pulley said county staff were doing a school-bus assessment after concerns that children were walking in a designated no-walk zone. "They were doing an assessment as I went to this meeting," Pulley said, and he reported the county was collecting data on where speeding problems occur. He also noted enforcement constraints: "There are 9 FHP troopers covering 3 counties for weight restrictions," he told the council, a staffing level he said limited enforcement of heavy-truck weight restrictions.
Pulley told council members that while county roads generally have an 80,000-pound limit unless otherwise posted, bridges have separate limits and trucks have damaged local roads. He also reminded the council that the upcoming July 4 celebration at Chipper Jones Park could create significant congestion in the area.
Council thanked Pulley for attending the county team meeting and for raising local concerns; no formal action was taken at the meeting, but Pulley invited council to tell him any items to raise at future county safety-team meetings.
