Selectboard approves safety mirror at Howe Hill underpass, sweeper rental and continued effort to address beaver-blocked culvert

The Sharon Selectboard approved several highway safety and maintenance measures after Highway Supervisor Allen Wight identified trouble spots at the Howe Hill railroad underpass and on Chapel Hill. Allen said VTrans confirmed a traffic mirror is an acceptable solution for the single-lane underpass and indicated a 26-inch traffic mirror would improve visibility; the board agreed the purchase was an appropriate safety expense.
Allen also recommended renting a street sweeper to clean all paved aprons and estimated a one-day rental at $300. The board approved proceeding with the sweeper rental. Regarding recurring culvert blockage on Chapel Hill caused by beaver activity and resulting overtopping of the road, the board asked Allen to continue efforts to locate a trapper to resolve the issue; an H&H study request for Chapel Hill Culvert #1 was submitted with completion anticipated by June 1.
