Selectboard awards FY27 winter sand contract to Pike; considers manufactured sand

The Sharon Selectboard voted unanimously to award the FY27 winter sand contract to Pike for up to 3,500 yards at $21.53 per yard, with the town to haul materials to help offset the higher unit price. The motion to award the contract was made by Scott Henkels and seconded by Kevin Gish.
Highway Supervisor Allen Wight recommended shifting from locally sourced brown sand to a manufactured winter sand product, saying the brown sand’s inconsistent composition can damage dirt roads and the manufactured product “is designed to stick better to the roads” and may reduce overall sand use despite a higher per-yard price. The board agreed it was a promising approach to try for FY27.
