Developers outline battery safety, remote monitoring and a 30,000-gallon firefighting cistern

The developer described the battery energy storage system (BESS) as lithium-ion chemistry — "very similar to the batteries that you have in your cell phone or your laptop" — and said the site will be monitored remotely to detect thermal events so individual portions can be shut down.
"We'll be developing a fire response plan with them. The cistern that they're requesting, the size of it was specifically requested by them to manage any potential fires on our site," engineer Alex Scribe said, describing coordination with Big Sandy Fire Department. The developers added they will keep on-site vegetation low to reduce fuel and that remote monitoring will allow operators to isolate portions of the site if sensors indicate a problem.
Residents asked about recent battery fire incidents reported elsewhere and requested specific safety documentation. Developers said UL testing, industry standards and safety certifications apply and promised to share technical materials and vendor safety documentation in follow-up communications and permit materials.
