Heidi Ross, the city’s budget officer, told the commission the city is seeking permission to apply for the Florida DEP Recreational Trails Program to rehabilitate Cypress Preserve Park. “The total project cost is estimated right now at $785,000,” Ross said, and added that the grant’s maximum award is $450,000, leaving an estimated local gap of about $335,000 should the city be selected.
Ross described the immediate scope as a phase 1 trail upgrade: resurfacing roughly 1,800 linear feet of existing multiuse trail to a more accessible surface, adding site amenities and benches, renovating two existing pavilions, and including one new pavilion in an open clearing near the Turnpike. She said ADA accessibility and safety issues caused by root intrusion drove the need for the work, and that any awarded grant would come back to the commission for budget inclusion if accepted.
Commissioners pressed staff on specific items included in the grant and on longer-term park features such as lighting and restrooms. Ross said restroom renovation is a separate CIP project and that security cameras and trimming work are being pursued through other funding avenues. She noted community feedback collected at a public meeting and said staff had received letters of support from advisory boards and HOAs. The commission took no final funding vote at the workshop stage; the item was presented for approval to submit the application only.
