A resident who spoke during the July 23 Fort Branch Town Council public comments said the shelter-house air conditioner did not sufficiently cool a recent rental and requested a partial refund of the $215 fee. The resident told the council she paid for the shelter rental and brought time-stamped photos and videos of the thermostat readings to show the unit never cooled below a high-70s temperature during the event.
"We paid $215. We were miserable the whole time," the resident said, describing roughly 30 attendees who left early because of the heat. Town staff and council members discussed maintenance possibilities — including a dirty outside unit or a worn filter — and a staff member reported a 20-degree temperature split on a follow-up check, indicating the unit was producing a colder air temperature than intake air but still not meeting expectations for a large event.
Council members debated whether a full refund was warranted because the facility was used, and a motion to grant a 50% refund passed. The council directed staff to process the refund and advised staff to review maintenance and thermostat presets for future rentals to reduce recurrence.
