Two recipients, Starry DeCosta and Dylan Young, were not present.
The mayor framed the awards as part of Mayor Samuel S. Brown's legacy of expanding educational opportunity, noting the scholarship was established in 1999 to assist Lauderdale Lakes high school and college students. The commission and attendees applauded the recipients and the scholarship committee members who reviewed applicants.
