Library staff asked the commission to approve a draft Certified Local Government (CLG) contract to conduct a reconnaissance-level survey of properties across the city. Staff said the grant would target roughly 3,000 parcels, produce an inventory useful for National Register nominations and historic-district planning, and be funded with a $50,000 city match from hotel/motel funds if the state provides the other $50,000.
"We're hoping on at least 3,000 parcels for the city of Mercedes," the library presenter said, explaining the survey will support nominations and potential tax-incentive eligibility for rehabilitation projects. Commissioner Ruben Saldana and other commissioners praised the reconnaissance approach as a sensible first step to identify high-priority preservation targets and potential funding sources. The commission moved, seconded and approved the contract as presented.
