Sheriff’s Office and Fire Rescue report March statistics and community outreach

The commission heard monthly public-safety updates from Broward Sheriff's Office and the district chief of fire rescue.
Captain Phillips of the Broward Sheriff's Office reported 2,962 calls in March, 73 arrests, 566 citations and 110 field contacts. He noted an overall 2% decrease in crime but flagged a 350% increase in vehicle burglaries in one community (18 vehicles) that prompted grant-funded saturation patrols; investigators reported arrests in another jurisdiction that may be linked.
District Chief Chaz Hackett presented a fire-rescue briefing and said the department logged 716 emergency-service calls in March, 350 of which were transports; he said fire inspections are 67.5% complete for the fiscal year and recounted a recent pediatric resuscitation as an example of operational readiness. Hackett encouraged residents to contact fire inspectors with questions and emphasized the department’s outreach to schools and community events.
