Lauderdale Lakes outlines roundabouts and speed-bump pilot as part of traffic-calming grant

City engineering staff and the project lead Ron briefed commissioners on a grant-funded traffic-calming project targeting multiple neighborhoods in Lauderdale Lakes.
Ron said the FDOT-funded scope (applied for in 2019) includes permanent asphalt roundabouts and speed bumps in Eastgate, Northgate, Oakland Estates and Westgate, and that temporary plastic speed bumps are being funded separately for pilots. "For this particular project... it was applied for back in 2019," Ron said, explaining the process can take multiple years and that contract advertisement, pre-bid meetings and state approvals contribute to timelines.
Commissioners and staff discussed prioritization criteria for neighborhoods, petitions and crash data analysis to support installations, and trade-offs such as emergency-response impacts. Ron said the project will include about two roundabouts in Eastgate and Northgate, one in Oakland Estates, and a mixture of bumps and roundabouts across zones; he estimated temporary speed bumps could be procured in three to six months if funding is available. Commissioners requested staff add community-requested streets (including NW 43rd Court and 44th Court) to ongoing lists for future consideration.
