SHPO updates Commission on ADA pathway repairs at Verendrye Monument; work orders expected

Jozef Lamfers of the South Dakota State Historic Preservation Office updated the Pierre/Ft. Pierre Historic Preservation Commission on efforts to resolve ADA compliance problems at the Verendrye Monument site. He said SHPO has been discussing design options with the state engineer’s office to address settling, separating and shifting concrete and to provide irrigation for the site; work orders to begin repairs are anticipated soon.
Commission President Kelli Buscher told members the SHPO grant that had been intended for a Pierre Historic Hill District review was revised to be applied to the Verendrye ADA pathway work; she noted the current SHPO grant cycle ends July 31, 2026. Commissioners also discussed the feasibility of connecting the Verendrye site to nearby walking trails but noted trail development typically requires city-initiated grant requests and is beyond the scope of the current SHPO-funded repair work.
