On the podcast Mario Cantu described a governor's beautification grant the city could pursue and said achieving Gold Star recognition would strengthen the group's and city’s competitiveness. "There's a governor's grant that's, basically can qualify for the city of Mission up to a $250,000," Cantu said, adding the funds could be used for beautification, parks and cleanup efforts.
Cantu noted that last year’s winner in the comparable category (Laredo) used canal cleanups and data collection on litter to secure the award; he urged collecting similar documentation to improve Mission’s chances. Organizers framed the grant as a "blue-sky" goal tied to volunteer-led projects that demonstrate measurable environmental benefits.
