AEDC says Atlantic Gateway sewer work opening industrial park; shell building frame collapsed during construction

Brody said the cleared shell building site is under construction and is being marketed through North Carolina Southeast. He told commissioners the project encountered a construction incident when a subcontractor attempted to lift I‑beams with a forklift in windy conditions and the frame collapsed; AEDC staff described the cause as improper lifting practice by the subcontractor. AEDC staff reported outreach to about 60 acres of property owners using GIS maps to identify possible sellers.
Commissioner Lawrence Gatewood asked whether the AEDC director position had been advertised; AEDC representatives explained current staffing changes (Brook Ainsworth is deputy director) and discussed expectations for proactive business recruitment. No board action was taken on AEDC staffing or projects at the meeting.
