Leoti volunteer fire department orders bunker gear, council moves leftover funds into equipment account

Fire Chief Mike Nickelson and Assistant Chief Steve Baum gave a year-end update Dec. 15, reporting a second round order of bunker gear that will include five sets and announcing fire school planned for Jan. 31–Feb. 1, 2026 to be held on the school grounds. Nickelson asked the council to direct any remaining 2025 Fire Department funds into the department’s equipment fund.
Councilor Kelma Burch moved and Councilor Derek Meyer seconded a motion to transfer any 2025 Fire Department budget money left after the audit into the Fire Department equipment fund; the motion carried unanimously. The council also publicly thanked the Leoti Volunteer Fire Department and EMS for their service.
Why it matters: the equipment purchase and fund transfer are meant to sustain department readiness and replace or supplement turnout gear. The move consolidates year-end unspent funds for capital equipment rather than operating expenses.
