Leoti’s City Council voted unanimously Dec. 15 to amend Ordinance 2018-04 so retail sales of alcoholic liquor on Sundays are permitted from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The motion was made by Councilor Derek Meyer and seconded by Councilor Jim Kreutzer.
Jeff Callen of Leoti Liquor asked the council to change the local restriction, telling the body that the current ordinance prohibits sales before 1:00 p.m. and after 6:00 p.m. on Sundays while Kansas statutory hours for alcoholic liquor sales run from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Council approved the narrower local window of 11:00 a.m.–8:00 p.m. to allow the store more flexibility with seasonal business hours. The amendment was recorded as unanimous.
Why it matters: the change alters local control over Sunday alcohol sales hours set by ordinance and will allow at least one downtown retailer to adjust service hours with the seasons. The council approved the change during the public-comment portion of the meeting; there was no recorded dissent.
What’s next: the amended ordinance will be incorporated into city code and take effect according to the council’s procedural rules for ordinance amendments.
