Wake County Board adopts resolution launching yearlong 50th‑anniversary celebration of district merger

Luton said the district will invite community members to join a 50th anniversary community advisory committee to help ensure celebrations reflect the full history and perspectives of the district.
The board read a commemorative resolution acknowledging the July 1, 1976 merger and recognizing 2026 as a year to honor the history, people and impact of the Wake County Public School System. The resolution was read aloud by board members and adopted unanimously. Chair Swanson and Superintendent Dr. Taylor signed copies for public display and the district's official records.
Board members said they look forward to centering community voices and student stories during the anniversary year. No policy action was associated with the resolution beyond the formation of advisory and celebratory activities.
