DSS seeks lead social worker, multiple positions and vehicle replacement in FY27 budget requests

The Department of Social Services presented detailed requests for FY27 during the May 7 budget workshop, citing a recent doubling of CPS intakes and increased documentation requirements from the PATH NC system. DSS Director Lula Jackson described a proposal for a lead social worker for the Children Services unit with a projected salary of $60,000 and a request to unfreeze five IMC II positions (one in Food & Nutrition Services and four in Medicaid), totaling roughly $200,000 in salaries.
The DSS submission also lists increases across multiple line items — overtime, attorney fees tied to APS/CPS caseloads, training/professional development, water, vehicle maintenance and capital outlay — and requests replacement of a 2012 Chevy Malibu described as “not roadworthy.” The proposal notes those staffing changes are intended to meet mandated timeframes and performance measures; commissioners asked county staff to include these items in the budget draft for further review.
