Health officer highlights regional trauma planning, EMS capacity and training opportunities

Health Officer Dave Welsh told the Franklin County board that the county is active in Region 6 workgroups for the state Rural Health Transformation program and described several initiatives under consideration, including a possible level-3 trauma center designation at a regional hospital and an EMS capacity survey to identify gaps.
Welsh said the region is exploring seed funding to study candidates for trauma designation and distribution of equipment such as stop-the-bleed kits and helmets. He also highlighted staff training opportunities, noting he attended a basic disaster life support virtual meeting and encouraged staff to take similar courses when funded. "We're always learning new stuff, in the health department," Welsh said, and he asked board members to think about projects that would position the county well for restored HFI funding in 2027.
