City Administrator Beth Linn asked the council Jan. 8 to move the city's observed Independence Day holiday from Friday, July 3, 2026, to Monday, July 6, 2026 so staff would be available to support the city's community picnic and fireworks show planned for July 3 as part of America 250 celebrations. Linn said she told staff to limit vacation requests for that period to ensure adequate staffing.
Councilmember Clay Longanecker moved to approve the change in holiday observation, seconded by Councilmember Josh Lewis. The motion carried 4-0 (Deb Lebakken absent). Linn said the change is to ensure "we will need all staff available to help with the picnic and fireworks show on Friday." The personnel manual's default (observing a holiday on Friday when the holiday falls on Saturday) was the reason staff sought a council-approved adjustment in this instance.
The council approved the holiday-observation change by voice vote; no additional rule changes or budget action were recorded in the meeting minutes.
