CHADRON, Neb. — The City Council set the first reading of the proposed 2026–2027 budget for its Aug. 3 meeting, the council recorded on July 7 during a special budget workshop.
The workshop focused on a draft budget distributed by City Manager Tom Menke; Menke told councilmembers the general fund is not balanced and asked for direction. Councilmember Shane Shepherd requested a prioritized list of projects and expenses and department supervisors were asked to identify potential cost-saving measures. No ordinance or spending action was adopted at the workshop; staff were directed to return with prioritized recommendations ahead of the Aug. 3 first reading.
