Lindsborg will market WAPA renewable energy credits through KMEA
Summary
Following a rule change, the council voted to sell Renewable Energy Credits associated with Western Area Power Administration energy using KMEA’s marketing directive rather than retiring them; vote was 5-0.
Staff reported that a rule change now allows the City to receive Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) generated alongside energy from the Western Area Power Administration (WAPA). The City may either sell the WAPA RECs (as it already does with Buckeye Wind Farm RECs) or retire them without compensation. KMEA handles marketing and sale of RECs and introduced a directive form that would include WAPA RECs alongside existing Buckeye RECs.
Councilmember Larry Lysell moved to sell the WAPA RECs and sign the KMEA Directive to allow KMEA to market the City’s RECs on an annual basis; the motion was seconded by Councilmember Andrew Smith and passed 5-0 by roll call vote.
