Superintendent announces $1.1 million bequest to support vocational education in McDowell County

The superintendent told the McDowell County Board of Education that a friend of the late Jerry Herndon delivered a bequest of $1,100,000 to the district to support vocational education for McDowell County children. "As a friend of many decades of Jerry, I asked to be able to share a bit about Jerry to accompany his bequest of $1,100,000 to help further vocational education efforts for children in McDowell County," the superintendent read from the email he received and shared with the board.
The superintendent said the check was turned over to the district finance office and will be used to support the county's career and technical education (CTC) efforts, including work to place a CTC in Fall River. He described Herndon as a West Virginian who wanted to invest in local vocational opportunities. The board did not take action at the meeting beyond accepting the announcement; staff said they will post a notice on the district website and coordinate with local partners on how to steward the funds.
