Board approves comprehensive package of updated district policies, voice vote 4–0

The board spent a substantial portion of its April 21 meeting reviewing an extensive list of updated district policies that the superintendent said were mostly technical edits to reflect recently passed state laws and to correct typographical items.

Policies enumerated on the record included bylaws and governance items, election and resignation procedures, leader evaluation, state accountability measures, adoption of programs-to-study, parental participation, alternative delivery and micro school definitions, guidance counseling, health and safety programs, student privacy and parental access to information, extracurricular participation rules, scholastic athletics, special education, program accountability and evaluation, and several others. The superintendent said the updates came after review by the EOLA (Enterprise/education policy review) and that some items moved "may" to "shall" where legislation required it.

Given the breadth of the package, the chair asked for a motion to approve the updated policies under item G in their third and final reading. After a motion and second, and limited clarifying questions about whether the district would continue using existing policy-update vendors, the board approved the updates by voice vote, recorded as 4–0. The superintendent said future updates will reflect any subsequent legislative changes and that the district will continue to choose from provided templates or craft local language as needed.

Board members emphasized the importance of keeping policies current and noted that state law supersedes board policy until the local language is updated.
