Facilities director: smoke, soot and structural damage at Logan Elementary; insurance estimate pending

Andrew Dodson, the district’s director of operational support, told the board that smoke and soot from the February fire "permeated every inch of the building" and that opening windows or wiping surfaces will not restore air quality. He said many PTAC wall HVAC units likely need replacement and that there was damage to the electrical system, fire alarm system and network cabling.

"The smoke and associated soot permeated every inch of the building," Dodson said, describing why limited on‑site cleanup won't be sufficient and why mechanical units will probably need replacement rather than repair. He added that the district is awaiting the insurer's finalized report on scope and cost and that code issues could require bringing some parts of the building up to current standards. Dodson also listed other county projects: central office water‑line replacement, elevator modernizations, parking‑lot milling and bids for asphalt work at multiple sites, and drainage remediation as a top priority.

Dodson said the district has bids pending with architecture/engineering firm ZMM for permanent shoring at Chattenville Primary and that some temporary shoring is in place to keep kitchens operational. He told trustees the district will prioritize drainage fixes first because underlying drainage and foundation issues must be addressed before many other repairs. Dodson thanked maintenance staff for emergency response and noted the district expects a multi‑week timeline for some supplier deliveries and longer insurance processing times before full repair work can begin.
