Vivian Rodriguez, president of the Morris School District board of education, opened the recognition ceremony and introduced Superintendent Anne Mucci, who announced the evening would honor student-athletes and acknowledge Director of Athletics Smitty Horton’s pending retirement.
"He is everywhere. He is committed to Morristown High School and he will be deeply, deeply missed," Mucci said, asking the audience to applaud Horton for his years of service. Horton then addressed the crowd, thanking the board, coaches, parents and athletes and noting he has served in his role for the past 11 years.
The tribute recurred across presentations as coaches from nearly every program publicly thanked Horton for managing schedules, supporting coaches and sometimes stepping in — even driving buses when needed — to keep teams running. Coaches framed Horton’s contribution as operational (scheduling, logistics) and cultural (recruiting and mentoring coaches) rather than policy-making.
No formal board action accompanied the tribute; the recognition was ceremonial. The district invited attendees to a brief reception in the lobby following the presentations.
