Disabled American Veterans representative urges Goshen to opt in to 100% property‑tax exemption
Summary
Peter Rollins of the Disabled American Veterans described veterans' struggles obtaining benefits and urged the board to opt into a New York State law that would provide a 100% property‑tax exemption for permanently and totally disabled veterans; the board said it is prepared to opt in pending county guidance and implementation forms expected before October 2026.

Peter Rollins, representing the New York State Disabled American Veterans Department Service Office, told the Goshen Town Board on July 23 that the organization has been working to secure a 100% property‑tax exemption for permanently and totally disabled veterans and asked the town to opt in.
Rollins recounted the difficulty veterans face obtaining benefits and appealed to the board to adopt the exemption when the county issues guidance. “I went to the village of Goshen to their board meeting to opt in for a 100% disabled veterans full property tax exemption,” the written submission read, and Rollins described his personal experience with service‑connected injuries and the appeals process during his public remarks.
Board members expressed sympathy and said the town has informally agreed to opt in but is waiting for the county to issue implementing direction. The chair said the county requested municipalities hold off until county procedures are clarified; the town expects forms and guidance before the next tax roll cycle, which the meeting referenced as taking effect in October 2026.
Board members and attendees thanked Rollins for his service and the information he brought; staff said they expect a form for veterans to submit before October and advised residents to watch for county instructions.
