At the July 23 meeting the Lake Station City Council conducted first readings by title for two ordinances to appropriate opioid-settlement funds: an unrestricted account (ordinance 20 26-09) and a restricted account (ordinance 20 26-10). Council members asked how the dollars could be used and were told the funds stem from federal settlement dollars intended for opioid mitigation efforts.
“The restricted fund has more restricted uses. Unrestricted is more, fungible, more available,” the chair (speaker 4) explained while introducing the items. Members discussed that the city had not appropriated these funds before and that the council was asking to make the money available now so staff can plan potential projects. Both first readings passed on roll call for the council to further consider specific uses before a final appropriation.
