Lake Station's City Council on July 23 approved an emergency appropriation to buy road salt after staff told the council state supplies would be insufficient this winter. Councilman (speaker 7) moved to add ordinance 20 26-15 to the agenda and the council voted to approve the emergency purchase, citing an urgent need to fill the city's salt barn.
Dwayne, the city's project manager (speaker 11), told the council his office solicited bids and currently holds about 300 tons of treated salt. “If I get 800 tons to begin with, I'll take 400 of that, mix it with the current 300,” Dwayne said, describing a plan to blend untreated and treated material so the city can stretch its supply through January or February. Council members said the procurement is a preemptive step after INDOT signaled limited distribution to municipalities.
The ordinance (20 26-15) was carried by roll call. Council members emphasized the purchase was intended to ensure road safety and to avoid shortages once winter weather begins. Staff said they expected additional procurement proposals to arrive the following Monday and will share details with council when available.
