Council approves change order for Stockade Road erosion control

The City of Chadron council approved Change Order No. 2 for Paul Reed Construction & Supply on the Stockade Road improvement project, authorizing installation of a stabilization mat to hold the bank until vegetation establishes.
Public works staff explained that the mat has been installed and that crews will water it periodically so vegetation will grow through the mat and stabilize the slope. "I walked a little bit of it... the bank felt pretty stable," a staff speaker said while recommending approval. Staff added the state's participation covers nearly all project costs except street‑lighting, which will remain a city expense. The council approved the change order on a roll call vote.
The change order aims to reduce long‑term maintenance risk and was presented as a cost‑effective fix with state reimbursement covering most line items. Staff also noted follow‑up work to relocate a water service to an acceptable area and said the contractor has been performing required maintenance.
