Trustees and community press for band-room, gym and athletic upgrades amid reconfiguration talks

Several board members and residents raised specific facilities priorities during the reconfiguration discussion. Presenters and teachers noted the band program currently counts more than 100 students while the band room holds roughly 20; a resident described limited practice space and requested plans that preserve the program during consolidation. Commenters also asked whether football turf, additional locker rooms and new softball/baseball fields could be incorporated and how maintenance and lifecycle costs (turf expectancy 10–14 years) would affect future budgets.
Trustees asked HTK to show options that preserve shared-use space (staggered schedules, shared weight rooms and arts spaces) and to include logistics such as parking and ADA access. Staff acknowledged upgrades — some already identified in capital lists — will be necessary regardless of the final campus configuration and asked the board to prioritize which facility items must be funded immediately versus those that could wait for a phased plan.
