Councilor Robert Bellada asked the committee to install a rapid flashing beacon across Elm Street at Maple Street to anticipate increased downtown density and to protect a nearby daycare. He said the proposed crossing would serve children who play in a grassy area adjacent to the intersection.
DOT staff told the committee the street is being converted to two‑way traffic and that a design process is already under way that will address pedestrian crossings; the department recommended holding the petition so the crossing can be considered as part of the design rather than installed in isolation. Bellada agreed and the committee voted to hold the item pending the design work.
"I thought it would be wise to try to get ahead of it and try improve a rapid flashing beacon here," Bellada said. DOT staff said the design process will better identify the optimal crossing location and sight distances.
