KPPA says volunteering at schools generally won’t void retirement but paperwork may be requested

The presenter addressed concerns about volunteering at a child’s school after retirement and said routine unpaid volunteer activities typically will not void retirement. "In most circumstances, the requirements for post‑retirement volunteering with participating employer do not prevent you from volunteering at your child or grandchild's school by acting as a field trip chaperone, reading to an elementary school class or for volunteering for a band or other extracurricular fundraisers," the presenter said.

KPPA noted that if a retiree later submits paperwork to reemploy with the same school district, the Office of Legal Services may request additional information about the volunteer activity. Employers who allow retirees to volunteer should complete Form 6753 (Employer Certification of Volunteer) and both the employer and retiree forms should be returned to KPPA before volunteer service begins when the volunteer activity is with a participating employer and the retiree wants to safeguard benefits.
