Jamestown council hears bicentennial fundraising pitch, tables donation decision

Markham said organizers had secured sponsors and were seeking city support for specific events.
Markham outlined planned activities across the year, including a kickoff weekend, a countywide Pioneer Poetry competition, a dinner cruise planned for Oct. 3-4, a festival Oct. 17-18 with a headliner artist (for which she said three sponsors had pledged $110,000), an Easter egg hunt in spring, a Nov. 29 patriotic parade and a Dec. 6 Christmas event. She told the council the committee had raised about $70,000 so far and that individual event sponsorships range from $3,000 to $110,000; Markham said a video component was estimated at $7,000.
"We're really excited that Russell County is going to be celebrating 200 years and the majority of the activities will be in Jamestown," Markham said during her presentation. She asked the council to consider sponsoring either entire events or portions of events and offered to coordinate to identify levels of sponsorship the city might take on.
After questions and brief discussion about which events the city would sponsor and whether the county or neighboring Russell Springs would share costs, Council member Dwight moved to table the item so staff could gather specific event details and coordinate with other jurisdictions; Tony seconded the motion. The council agreed to delay a formal funding vote until the next meeting so members can review suggested sponsorship levels and determine whether the city will take part in a multi-jurisdictional contribution.
The council did not make a funding commitment at the meeting; members instructed staff to report back with recommended amounts and with clarity on whether the county and Russell Springs will participate.
