Ocean Ridge moves to align artificial-turf rules with new state standards

Town attorney Christy explained that the state's final rules, adopted May 19, set a minimum turf permeability of 10 inches per hour; the town's existing code used a 30-inch-per-hour standard measured per square yard. "So for all single-family residential properties in town of 1 acre or less in size, there are minimum standards for artificial turf will be consistent with FDEP standards," Christy said, explaining the draft sets the town metric to match the state minimum and includes a provision to remove or cap in-ground irrigation heads when turf is installed.
Commissioners asked about practical impacts for properties with swales, septic access and trees; Christy said the ordinance preserves other local restrictions for parcels not preempted by the state. One commissioner moved to approve the presented draft with a small amendment to tie the irrigation-head language to the FDEP reference; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. Several members requested staff monitor other jurisdictions and legal guidance and bring an update in roughly six months.
