Commission backs local designation for early fired-brick Moran store at 2380 Calle Principal

The Planning, Zoning and Historical Appropriateness Commission voted unanimously to forward a recommendation that 2380 Calle Principal (the Moran/Lernard store and associated rear building) be added to Mesilla's local historic register. Lyanna, a town historic specialist, presented the nomination, saying the property reflects early settlement, the introduction of new building technologies in the region and the presence of European immigrants in Mesilla.

Lyanna told commissioners the structure likely dates to the late 1850s—1860s and retains key material integrity—most notably fired-brick walls that are rare in the region—and that the property already appears in National Register documentation for the plaza area. The commission approved the recommendation by roll call. The nomination now goes to the Board of Trustees for final action, and staff said designation would subject exterior changes to design review while allowing interior work to proceed without restriction.
