Ellsworth City Council authorized staff to submit a concept paper to the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) Transportation Alternatives program seeking funding for a crosswalk on North Douglas Avenue between the high school tennis courts and the city tennis court.
Staff explained the concept paper is due Feb. 27; if the concept is selected, a full application would be required in May and awards would be announced later in the year. The project would require attention to pedestrian accessibility and site improvements beyond striping, including curb ramps and safe crossing infrastructure. The motion to submit the concept paper passed by voice vote, and staff will prepare the submission if council confirms support.
Council members expressed support for ensuring accessibility and careful design rather than a minimal 'paint-only' solution.
