County staffers describe heavy extradition caseload and use of a contracted service to cut costs

During the department update Cheryl described a heavy extradition workload that has required long trips and significant staff time. She said the county has used an outside company for longer‑distance extraditions and that contracting can reduce overtime and travel burdens on deputies.
"They charge us about a dollar and a quarter a mile," Cheryl said when describing the fee structure the county negotiated with its transport vendor. Cheryl added that the county would compare contractor costs to the full in‑house expense (including airline, hotel and overtime) when deciding whether to continue the contracted service for long trips.
Commissioners discussed cost tradeoffs and logistics — flights, rental cars, manifest and NCIC updates — but did not direct staff to adopt a specific procurement action during the meeting. Staff said they will continue to evaluate whether contracting or sending county personnel is more economical on a case‑by‑case basis.
