Committee presenters and leadership emphasized education as the largest share of the FY2027 recommendation, saying roughly 45–50% of state dollars are directed to education across K‑12, community colleges and higher education.
"We are spending 50 cents of every dollar that taxpayers send us in Mississippi on education," Speaker White said, and the speaker noted the formula will be fully funded for the third year in a row. Staff explained the student funding formula increase and described roughly $21 million paid under a Chickasaw (16th‑section) settlement that benefits certain northern counties' schools.
The committee identified the student funding formula and Medicaid among the top budget pressures, and members said continued monitoring will be required as the session moves forward.
